High School girls’ mile record broken
Mary Cain of New York, a high school junior, ran a 4:32.78 mile, to break the girls’ high school mile record.
She set the record Jan. 26 at the elite women’s mile at the New Balance Games in Manhattan. She finished third overall, just 1.17 seconds behind winner Sarah Bowman Brown, 26, a former nine-time All-American at the University of Tennessee.
Just 16 years old, Cain shattered the old record of 4:38.5 set in 1972 by Debbie Heald in Richmond, VA., with a wild dash to the finish line, moving from seventh to third place against the elite field of older runners.
